Evergreen, CO. As the holidays approach, the ultimate goal for your guest room, even if it’s a tiny one, is to make your houseguests feel comfortable and welcome, as well as offer them a peaceful and private place to rest and relax.
“By thinking ahead and anticipating their needs, interests and preferences, you can make their visit a time to remember” says Sandy Dixon, a member of the National Association of Professional Organizers and owner of Evergreen, Colorado-based Interior Arrangements, Inc., one of the country’s leading redesign and real estate staging training companies. “Most guests don’t want to burden their hosts by asking where the alarm clock or extra towels are, so think ahead and make these items easily accessible. It’s also a good idea to keep your guest room free of family belongings so that visitors feel completely welcome and not like an intruder.”
Try incorporating some simple hospitality touches to make your guest room a “home away from home” for your visitors. No matter how long or short your guests stay, these special touches will make you a first-class host.
- A simple welcome note accompanied by a couple of wrapped mints on their pillow or next to the bed is a charming touch.
- Adding fresh flowers or live plants in the room makes it more inviting.
- Place extra blankets, towels and pillows in the room or within easy access.
- Have stationery notepad, pens and stamped postcards of the area available.
- Place a tray of fruit, cookies and bottled water in the room in case they are early risers, have a midnight craving, or schedules are thrown off by traveling between several time zones.
- Have a mirror in the room for your guests to check their appearance and a wastebasket nearby.
- Make a bathroom “guest worthy” by placing a toothbrush, toothpaste, bottle of shampoo, comb, bath salts and hand lotion in a basket.
- Electronically equip the room with an alarm clock, reading light, radio and nightlight. If there is a television in the room, provide a current TV listing.
- Have books and magazines, as well as information about your town and state available for both information and entertainment.
- Hang a fresh bathrobe in the closet with a pair of slippers nearby.
